FAQ (en)

Here we have written some interesting questions and the answers.

Is it painful?

As a nose-job is done in most cases under general anaesthesia, You don´t feel any pain during surgery. For the phase immediately after surgery, you receive a potent analgesic intravenously. When a regular rhinoplasty is carried out, only slight dicomfort is felt after surgery. Strong pain is normally inexistent. Our patients normally take oral painkillers for only a few days after surgery. Some even don´t take them at all.

We are open for discussing everthing about this topic with you, for this is a very frightening idea for a lot of people.

Is there a swelling after surgery?

It is logical, that after surgery of the nose there is a swelling of the nose itself and the adjacent tissues, i.e. the deeper structures of the nose. So You will have a stuffed nose for approximally 5 days as if you had caught a cold. Also because of the swelling of the soft-tissues You will have a plaster, which is usually replaced on day 5. (See also Question 3)

Is there hematoma and bruising?

Chances are good, that You will be spared. Statistically, the ratio is 1/5. If You have got a black eye, it is normally gone after two weeks. So you are socially acceptable.

May I sunbathe?

Yes, but the infrared spectre of the sun will delay the subsidence of the swelling caused by the warmth, as sauna i.e. does the same. So it is not advisable to stay in full sunlight for a longer period of time. So  holidays in the south should be postponed. The same is applicable for strong physical training.

I wear glasses. Is that a problem?

Yes, that MAY be a problem. Glasses should principally not be worn 3-5 weeks after surgery. The weight of the glasses and the skin-contact may lead to delayed healing. Best would be to wear contact-lenses.

How long do I have to carry a plaster?

In most cases after rhinoplasty a plaster (of Paris) is necessary to stabilize the skeleton. In general the plaster is worn for 8-12 days. In cases of deviated nose it can be longer, after procedures in the tip-region only it will be shorter.

When will the swelling subside?

There are three main factors for the subsidence:

  • The extend of nose corrections
  • The biological basics
  • The skills and surgical handling during the operation

In some cases the swelling is completely gone after only three month; in sone cases it lasts more than one year. We have to insist on the fact that the final outcome of a rhinoplasty is in general visible only after one year; in cases of revisional surgery it can take even longer.

In general the patient can return to his daily life when the plaster is removed (~10 d post-op) without noticeable swelling (for the layman).

Will there be any visible scars?

A well performed rhinoplasty in general leaves no traces. In case of flaring nostrils, it is advisable to adjust them and therefore cuts are necessary in the visible field. If carried out correctly and no inborn healing impairment present, they are innoticeable after a few weeks.

Will breathing be impaired when the nose is smaller?

No, this is a rare exception. When a nose is diminished to a very tiny nose, the danger of this complication rises naturally. But even though the risk is little, we always have an eye on this aspect so that we can avoid this during surgery.

Can breathing impairment be improved in the same surgery?

Yes. Whenever there is a breathing impairment properatively, we will improve this during surgery. Luckily, this will have no impact on the aesthetic outcome. The chance, to fix both outer appearance and function is very positive for the well-being of the patient. Improved nasal breathing may lead to a more restorative sleep.

How long do I have to stay in hospital?

For most inpatient cases we have our patients the first night with us.If assumed necessary, the patient can stay longer with us. But this is mainly a matter of concern of the patient.

Is the removal of the nasal dressing painful?

This idea is frightening a lot of people. But in our clinic there is no reason for being afraid. If a tamponade is left in place for several days, it sticks to the mucosa. This makes withdrawal painful. But we take it out within a 24h period. So there is no sticking. And, furthermore, we pack it only in the anterior vestibule, not in the back of the nose.

So you don´t have to be afraid of any pain

Later on, is it noticeable?

For us it is predominantly that the nose is in perfect hormony with the rest aof the face. So it is not obvious, that surgery has been performed. If a strong reduction has taken place, it is logical that the nose is smaller. But surprisingly not all the people -even close ones-  notice the changes.

So in summary: The nose itself has no stigmata that tell about the executed nose-job

How precisely will the morphing be met?

Concerning the wanted result as sketched by the morphing-procedure: On a subjective scale from 0 to 100 a result of at least 85  is easily attainable for a well trained surgeon.

This implies that already the morphing has to be drawn with profound knowledge. For every rhinoplasty there are intrinsic natural limits, which should not be trespassed. The maker of the morphing should be well aware of that. Otherwise the morphing is just a nice picture, but cannot to be reached by surgical means. In those cases the real outcome can be very disappointing.

We can supply either the knowledge and the skill to "produce" both sketch and real nose in a predictable manner.

Is general anaesthesia indispensable?

In general, a nose-job is done under general anaesthesia (GA). Exeptions are for minor interventions, which can be carried out under local anaerthesia. Every clinic has it´s own way to perform this. We will discuss this extensively with you if applicable.

Is the surgery paid in part by my insurance?

If it is a purely cosmetic procedure, the insurance will pay nothing. If there is a nasal breathing impairment they may pay for the part which is functionally relevant. It is advisable to investigate prior to surgery if they will pay for it. Don´t hesitate to ask us helping you.

What laps of time should be planned?

Two weeks are sufficient. If you are a model, take a time out for 3 weeks.

How are the costs?

The span is between 2.500€ for minor corrections to 8.000€ for very challenging and complicated procedures. The main scope is in between 3.500 and 5.500€.

After Your first consultation, we can fix a flat-rate for You, so there will be no surprises in the end. But you should keep in mind that not only the price is crucial, it is mainly the quality of our "work". There is no use of saving at the first glance, if the outcome is not satisfying.

We are able to offer moderate prices for Hi-End performance, because we abstain from expensive advertisement and PR.
